Steel tools shape heartwood and sapwood into useful and beautiful objects that fill our lives and homes. My name is Jonathan Lyons and my workshop reflects my desire to explore woodworking, primarily with domestic hardwoods. These pages display both my creative exploration and my personal growth as a woodworker.
Shaping Heartwood with Steel
I began woodworking long ago and stumbled from project to project without much direction. Later I wanted to learn more but life became complicated and other things took priority until the pandemic. Without life’s usual distractions I found more time and energy.
The pandemic presented new opportunities to explore beyond reading about landscape trees and slicing little fallen trees here and there. Starting in 2020 I milled 3 trees that I air dried, supplying me with wood that I still use. I learned many skills through trial and error and the results keep getting better.
Urban lumber first caught my attention about 20 years ago, but my initial pursuit seldom went further than idle curiosity and acquiring a few small and interesting logs. Urban lumber and urban wood grew into a dynamic movement among woodworkers who want to pursue the craft while also making considerable contributions towards reducing waste and preserving forests.
